People actually thought that the closer your lived in the present the more in touch with your senses you were. We are typing, talking and otherwise distracted as we proceed with our daily lives. We can neither drink a cup of coffee, nor walk down the street without an electronic device diluting the ambience. We have stopped paying attention to our surroundings. When you stop paying attention to your surroundings, then you stop paying attention to all the things great and small that make up our lives. We are denying ourselves experience. We no longer fail to live in the moment; arguably it is difficult for most of us to even define what really constitutes that moment and how it affects our lives. You know, Christopher, we Norwegians like to think of ourselves as a proud, practical people. But most important, we are all about family - and about families staying close. This is nothing new to you because the same applies in America, of course. And Christopher, it’s easy to note the same closeness in your own lovely family. Now, you and Kristine are becoming a family of your own. And, in the process, you are each becoming a part of another family. Kristine with yours. And you with Kristine’s. Family love means boundless love and care, support and devotion - though, I must admit, at times that love can be a bit misguided. That reminds me of a little story that I’d like to tell in closing. Now, you folks from America should know that Lena and Ole are two charming, enduring folkloric figures, a long-time man and wife around whom we Norwegians have created hundreds or even thousands of funny and heartwarming tales. Lena and Ole are beautiful in that they are make you laugh. They also remind you about what it’s like for all of us as marvelously imperfect human beings on this earth. In that way, Lena and Ole are universal. But enough of that. Here is the story: Ole, Lena, and their son Sven went for a winter walk in the woods. At first, they had a great time. But after walking deeper into the woods, they discovered that they were lost. Soon it was getting dark and cold and they were getting scared.and hungry. Somehow, they found themselves with no food, no shelter and no hope whatsoever. But at least they were together as a family. Finally, Ole dug down into the deep snow to look for nuts or berries or anything else to eat and..he found a lamp. When he rubbed it to get the snow off, a genie came out. Their active ingredient is one called chitosan, which shares some similarities with dietary fiber but is actually derived from shellfish. Like fiber, the chitosan is passed rather quickly through the digestive tract as it allegedly absorbs as much as 10 times its weight in fat. This of course is all eliminated as waste. Luckily, Dr. Judy Stern, cofounder of the American Obesity Association and professor at the University of California looked into chitosan and arrived at the conclusion that chitosan actually has no fat binding abilities but did seem to have an effect on raising the good HDL cholesterol levels. My main concern is that if there is a fat binding capability of chitosan or any other concoction that could be coming our way in the near future that it needs to be avoided. This is largely because of the fact that only certain vitamins can be dissolved in fat and are otherwise rendered useless. Vitamins such as E,A,D, K, and F are all fat soluble vitamins that are crucial to cardiovascular and orthopedic health. Furthermore, any fat binding substance would also rid the body of the heart friendly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. In the meantime, more research needs to be done in order to reach an ultimate conclusion about the nature and effectiveness of these products, Personally speaking, replacing fat blockers and carb blockers with a well-managed diet and bouts of regular exercise would prove to be the best carb blocking and fat blocking prescription once could ever ask for.
